SINGLE PAIR ETHERNET (SPE)

T1-ETHERNET: DATA TRANSFER VIA A SINGLE-PAIR TWISTED-PAIR CABLE

The Ethernet based networking of automation systems with all its advantages has long been established. In factory automation, robotics and also in commercial vehicles. With SPE technology, there are now additional decisive advantages that can significantly reduce investment costs, installation costs, space requirements and weight. A completely digital IP-based and transparent network from the sensor to the cloud is now possible.

The IEEE specifies different Single-Pair Ethernet variants. For the user, these differ mainly in the data transfer rate available and the maximum cable length. The 10Base-T1 standard further differentiates two options for bridging long distances (T1L) and a multidrop method (T1S), which provides a shared medium similar to a conventional bus system.

IEEE 802.3cg (10Base-T1) 10 megabits per second up to 1000 meters

IEEE 802.3bw (100Base-T1) 100 megabits per second up to 15 meters

IEEE 802.3bp (1000Base-T1) 1000 megabits per second up to 40 meters

The IEC 63171 standard defines the connectors for SPE cables and devices. Both, the variants for the control cabinet with a low degree of protection (IP20) and field devices with a high degree of protection (IP65/67) are defined. A distinction is also made between different areas of application such as building installation and industrial applications. Standardized M12 D-coded connectors, which are established in the market for Ethernet communication and are widely available, are used in current TERZ switches. This does not result in any disadvantages for the physical data transmission. In the future, there will be solutions tailored to the target markets with additional connection technologies.

The IEEE standard 802.3bu Power over Data Line (PoDL) describes the procedure for providing supply voltage for end devices via data cabling. Similar to Power over Ethernet (PoE) for standard networks, PoDL was specially developed for the new data transmission technology SPE in order to further reduce the effort and cables required for the installation of new networks. Different voltage levels and performance classes are defined in the standard.

Originally developed for the automotive sector to bring Ethernet into vehicles as an on-board network, T1 Ethernet is now considered the revolution for the networking of sensors and actuators in industrial and building automation. In addition to reduce cabling effort, SPE technology offers the option of setting up a completely IP-based, transparent communication path from the sensor to the cloud. Proprietary bus systems and transmission technologies and the gateways required for that, will therefore be obsolete in future IIoT 4.0 applications. Thanks to the full compatibility with classic Ethernet at the protocol level, nothing changes for the user, except for the reduced cabling.

Single Pair Ethernet is a crucial component for completely transparent IP-based data communication from the sensor to the cloud.

T1-XS41 - SPE T1 Industrial Ethernet Switch IP65/67

Cabinet-free networking directly in the field with only one pair of wires

The T1-XS41 is an ultra-compact SPE switch for installation directly in the field. By using contacts 1 and 3 of the standard D-coded connector, you can quickly and easily save costs and space in cabling. An unshielded twisted single-pair cable is sufficient for data transmission up to a length of 15m. Larger cable lengths and protection against EMC interference can be achieved with shielded cables. The data collected from the SPE ports is transmitted with gigabit speed via an X-coded M12 standard Ethernet port.
